Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence are able to skipper a vessel up to 24m in length, 20 miles from a safe haven. You will feel comfortable taking a cruising yacht on a Coastal passage. The experience gained will give the confidence that if there were any problems you would have the answers. Having the qualification provides that reassurance allowing you to venture away from your usual cruising ground and explore new places.
The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal is the first professional qualification within the RYA scheme. You are able to apply for a commercial endorsement allowing you to work as a professional skipper.

The training programme includes all the skills and qualifications required for the Coastal exam. Once you have completed your Yachtmaster Coastal exam the next step would be the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (need link), which allows you to venture up to 150 miles offshore.
The traditional pathway to a career on a Superyacht has started with the Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. However, it has been recognised that crew working on large yachts find it difficult to gain the necessary experience required for the Yachtmaster Offshore. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have recently announced an alternative route.
